Booking and payment solutions for Icelandic campsites, with online bookings, a backend for staff, self-service kiosks, point-of-sale terminals, access control and more. Currently in use at over 15 campsites around Iceland.
Introduction
Reisa.is is a booking and self-service solution for Icelandic campsites, and my largest project to date. It started in 2018 as a database for overnight stays at Hamrar campsite in Akureyri, where I worked as a camp warden during my university summers. The online booking system launched in 2022 and is now used by campsites all around Iceland.
Online Bookings
Each campsite has its own booking page where guests can book and pay for accommodation. Some campsites offer multiple accommodation options, and a pitch can be selected from a list or on a map. Card payments go directly to the campsite's own payment provider, with integrations for five payment providers in Iceland. Guests can then manage their bookings and request a refund through the booking confirmation email.
Backend
Staff can manage everything from the backend, which is a web-based control panel. All bookings, payments and overnight stays show up in one place, whether they come from the website, the reception desk or a self-service kiosk.
The backend is the core of the booking system. Its main features include:
A booking calendar showing the status of every zone and pitch for a given month
Configurable campsite layout, numbered pitches, open ground, or alternative accommodation options.
Flexible pricing rules, for example by unit, guest age and season, plus discounts
Limits on guests and units, opening hours and single-day closures
Detailed statistics on revenue, nights and guests, and automatic submissions to Statistics Iceland
Automatic confirmations, reminders and access codes by email, with invoices and receipts as PDF
Cancellations and refunds handled directly in the system through the payment provider integration
Self-Service Kiosk
A touch screen at the reception or service building lets guests select a pitch, register and pay by themselves, at any time of day, even when staff is not present. A paper receipt is printed after payment and the reservation goes straight into the backend, showing up like any other booking. The kiosk can also sell other goods and services, such as souvenirs from an honesty store or access to laundry rooms and showers.
Point of Sale
A custom point-of-sale system for selling accommodation and services at reception, with a quick checkout flow for simple sales and a detailed one when more customization is needed. It connects to a card terminal and cash drawer, prints receipts and stickers for tents and vehicles, and includes a time clock for staff.
Gatekeeper
Campsites can integrate with Gatekeeper, the access control system that reads licence plates and opens the vehicle barrier for guests who have paid. Guests also receive a unique PIN code in their confirmation email that opens the barrier and facilities. More payment solutions, such as payments for laundry machines and showers, are currently in development.
Infrastructure
I like to use this project to experiment with and deepen my infra / platform knowledge. Reisa.is runs on a Kubernetes platform where each campsite runs as an isolated tenant:
Servers on Hetzner, provisioned with Ansible, with management access only over Tailscale
Single-node microk8s clusters for development and production
GitOps deployments with ArgoCD, each campsite generated from a shared Helm chart
A self-hosted zot container registry, with application images built in CI/CD
Prometheus metrics and container logs collected with Alloy and sent to Grafana Cloud
Encrypted database and volume backups to S3 with restic
